Free trade agreements have played a preponderant role in shaping the legal regime on intellectual property rights related to pharmaceutical innovation. Although these agreements seek to promote international trade and clearly regulate it from an economic perspective, the experience in several countries provides evidence that innovative ecosystems, governed by high standards of intellectual property protection, end up having positive effects on public health.
The current situation, in which new free trade agreements have entered into force for our country, constitutes the appropriate environment for the Mexican State to incorporate measures into our legal regime that, beyond complying with international obligations, may be beneficial to
improving health conditions in the country.
